Painting And Drawing With
Corel Painter Essentials

Painter Essentials 2 Included in your Graphire box is Corel Painter Essentials. This amazing program includes more than 50 pressure-sensitive natural media brushes that are designed for use with a Wacom pen.

What this means is that these brushes act the same way on your computer as their real world counterparts act on paper.

For instance - if you press harder on a brush the resulting brush stroke will be thick and dark and if you just brush lightly then the brush stroke will be smaller and lighter - this is the way of both the real world brush and a brush in Painter.

The artistically inclined are more than capable of drawing and painting on their computer with their Wacom Graphire. It's what they do.

For the rest of us, however, it has always been more difficult or seemingly impossible ... until now!

Painting

What you will learn is how to use digital watercolor to paint a sketch. This a lot of fun and the end results can be quite pleasing.

Butterfly

I taught a buddy named John how to do this and he was so proud of what he did that he emailed it to himself so he could brag to his friends and family. At first John was reluctant to try it out because, as he said, "I have no artistic ability".

Tracing

I admit that I cannot draw worth a whit but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate what the artistic folks can do.

Here is a technique using Painter Essentials or Painter that is fun and easy.

Of course this technique is the easiest when you are using a Wacom tablet like the Bamboo or Intuos3. You may be able to do this with a mouse but why submit yourself to such torture?

Turning a Photograph Into a Painting

Drawing

I don't know about you but when I see someone take a Wacom pen and proceed to draw something with it on a computer, I look on in utter amazement (and jealousy, I admit).

How do they do that?

I have a challenge drawing a stick man and here they are fashioning incredible line art just like that - with no apparent effort. I always tell them that what they are doing should be illegal but they just chuckle and keep doing what they are doing.

You can what accomplished artists can do with a Graphire by visiting the Drawing page.

Some of the samples are simply quick doodles while others are comprehensive and rich in detail.

The good news for the artistically-challenged individuals like me is that there is a way that I can take either a real photograph or a photograph on a computer and turn it into line art with your Graphire!

3D Drawings

Some time ago I met Sean, a Character and Texture Artist who works with a large (9X12) Intuos tablet.

Wolf Sean works with both 2D and 3D drawings. I was amazed by his work and I bet you you will be as well!

Sean mentioned hat there was absolutely no way he could have done what he did without his Intuos tablet.

The Good News

If you have a real photograph and would like to turn it into a line drawing (your gramma or friend or mother - anything) this is how you do it.

  1. With the program running, make a big blank piece of digital paper.

  2. Select the pencil tool and select black as your color.

  3. Flip your Graphire over and move the four latches that hold the plastic cover in place.

  4. Tape the photograph to the plastic cover (with the image up so you can see it with the cover replace on the Graphire 4).

  5. Replace the plastic cover, turn the Graphire over and start tracing the picture.

It is that simple to set-up and now it is up to you to finish the job. If you don't like what you see, turn the pen over, erase the offending line(s) and start again.

Kids, Painter and a Graphire 4

This program and a Graphire is a natural for kids because they are not at all intimidated by a computer (they grew up with them) and they absolutely love to draw and paint.

Give them a Wacom Graphire and Painter Essentials and let them go - it can keep them busy for hours and unlike a video game, exercising their creative muscles will last a lifetime.
