Feathering Selections
by: Rich

By feathering I am thinking you mean the softening of the edges of a selection, right?

The best way to do this with Paint Shop is to make your selection and then go to Selections > Modify > Feathering (keyboard shortcut Ctrl-H).

Then you select the amount you would like the edges softened.

There are some other options in the Modify dialogue as well.

Inside/Outside Feather - you can select to apply the feathering to the inside of the selection or to the outside or both (the last one would make a nice soft transition).

You can also unfeather (really, is there such a word in English>).

To see the effect of the feather try this ...

1. Make your selection and the apply some feathering (either in the Selection Menu or on the options bar at the top of the screen).

2. Go to Selection > Promote Selection to Layer (Ctrl-Shift-P). De-select (Ctrl-D).

3. Add a new raster layer above the original background and below the promoted selection layer and then fill it with black (or white if the selection is black) using the Flood Fill tool.

This will give you a really nice look at your selection and the effect of your feathering.

Does that answer your question? If not - get back to me with more information.
